Topic 2.5 - Cognitive intervention (ESR 9)
Topic 2.5 Cognitive intervention will be hosted at the University Linköping (SE), and supervised by Björn Lyxell.
Previous research has shown that cognitive development of children with hearing Impairment (HI) fitted with cochlear implant (CI) and/or hearing aids (HAs) and deafblind children with CI (e.g. children with type 1 Usher´s syndrome) is in some cases (e.g. phonological) different than that of typically developing children. The first specific aim is to examine development of working memory capacity, phonological and lexical skills, and executive functions in these three groups and to compare their results with typically developing hearing children. The second specific aim is to conduct an internet-based cognitive intervention (carried out at home) in order to examine whether it is possible to improve cognitive development. Cognitive intervention requires intensity (e.g. 20 minutes five to six days during at least five weeks) in order to be effective. An internet-based intervention, carried out by parents and children in their homes, will improve the practical possibilities for them to take part in the programme.
This work will provide a more detailed overview of the cognitive development of children with HI and deafblind children to inform the more effective fitting of hearing devices and the implementation of intervention plans. This work will improve the identification of children who will benefit the most from cognitive intervention before the actual training takes place.
Part of this project will take place at KU Leuven to gain insights and experience from neurophysiological research methods and at OTIC to gain insight into aspects of listening effort assessment tests for adult HA and CI users.
